MASSAGE/AROMATHERAPY
Massage works on the soft tissues (the muscles, tendons and ligaments) which can improve muscle tone. Although it normally affects those muscles just under the skin, the benefits may also reach the deeper layers of muscle and possibly even the organs themselves. Of course, there is the added bonus that it also creates a pleasant sensation on the skin.
Massage also stimulates blood circulation and assists the lymphatic system, so improving the elimination of waste throughout the body.
A single massage will be enjoyable, but the effects of massage are cumulative and a course of massage treatments will bring the most benefits. Regular massage can have the effect of strengthening and toning the entire body mechanism, and so help to prevent unnecessary strains and injuries that might otherwise occur due to excess tension and any resulting structural weaknesses. Massage can also stimulate or calm the nervous system and so may help reduce fatigue, leaving the patient with a feeling of replenished energy.
One really pleasant way of enhancing the benefit of a good massage is to combine it with a session of aromatherapy. This is where fragrant and essential oils can be applied to the skin or, in some cases, inhaled. The essential oils, which are 100% natural and are extracted from plants, are particularly effective in relieving tension and even curing some minor ailments.
Let’s take a closer look at both kinds of oil in turn and see how they work...
ESSENTIAL
OILS
Essential oils produce a pleasing, natural aroma which can have a
positive psychological effect on the body. The oils contain the true
essence of the plant it was derived from and are highly concentrated.
They are usually sold for individual use in very small bottles and
to avoid deterioration should be stored in a cool, dry place.
PERFUME
OILS
Fragrance oils are not the same as essential oils. They contain unnatural
chemicals and don't provide the therapeutic benefits of essential
oils.
SKIN
APPLICATION
Oils that are applied to the skin are believed to be absorbed into the
bloodstream. As the essential oils are very powerful and concentrated
they should NEVER BE APPLIED TO THE SKIN IN AN UNDILUTED FORM.
Dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil such as
- Sweet almond oil
- Apricot kernel oil
- Grapeseed oil
Some oils can cause ALLERGIC
REACTIONS on some people. When using a new oil for the first time, do
a skin patch on a small area of skin. WAIT 24 HOURS to see if there
is any form of reaction.
INHALATION
Inhaling essential oils is believed to offer psychological and physical
benefits. The aroma stimulates the brain to trigger a positive effect,
while the natural components of the essential oil are drawn into the
lungs to provide physical benefits.
OTHER
USES
Some essential oils can act as a natural repellent and pesticide. An
example is citronella which, when used in candles, produces a vapour
which will keep mosquitoes at bay.
WHEN TO AVOID ESSENTIAL OILS
- During pregnancy
- If suffering from asthma
or epilepsy
NEVER
LET CHILDREN USE ESSENTIAL OILS UNSUPERVISED
Treat the oils as you
would for medicines - keep them in a safe place
